Granite City Grand Prix 2025: Big Effort, Big Spirit from Our Judo Club at Aberdeen Sports Village

younger students of ultimate judo before the granite city championships

The mats were buzzing with action last weekend as our judo team headed to the Granite City Grand Prix 2025, held at the impressive Aberdeen Sports Village. It was one of the biggest competitive outings for our club this year, with 21 judoka stepping up to represent us across various age and weight categories.

From the very first match to the final ippon of the day, the energy, commitment, and club spirit on display were second to none. Whether it was a judoka competing for the very first time or one of our more seasoned players chasing new goals, every athlete gave it their all – and we couldn’t be prouder.

9 Medals and So Much More

We walked away with a total of 9 medals, which is a strong result in a competitive national-level event like this. But beyond the podium finishes, the day was about so much more:

  • Gaining competition experience

  • Testing techniques under pressure

  • Handling nerves

  • Supporting teammates

  • Learning from both wins and losses

Every single competitor brought intensity and heart to the tatami, and their attitudes and effort truly reflected the values of judo: respect, courage, and perseverance.

A Team Effort On and Off the Mat

One of the best parts of the Granite City Grand Prix wasn’t just the fights – it was the incredible team spirit. Our squad, coaches, parents, and supporters all came together to lift each other up. From shouting encouragement in the stands to helping first-timers prepare and settle nerves, the sense of unity in our club was on full display.

It’s clear that we’re not just building fighters — we’re building a strong, positive judo community.

Growth, Reflection, and the Road Ahead

No matter the outcome of individual matches, everyone walked away with valuable lessons. For some, it was the realisation that they can handle the nerves and intensity of a big tournament. For others, it highlighted areas we need to improve — whether that's grip work, mat awareness, fitness or tactical thinking.

And that’s exactly what competition is for. We now go back to the dojo with clear goals and renewed motivation, knowing that the only way forward is through consistent hard work and smart training.

Thank You to Everyone Involved

A huge thank you to the organisers of the Granite City Grand Prix, the volunteers, table officials, referees, and of course, the family and friends who continue to support our athletes through early starts, long days, and tough moments.

And to our athletes: you showed heart, discipline, and team spirit in abundance. We’re proud of your efforts and excited for what comes next.
