The promotion was awarded by none other than Roger Gracie, one of the most revered figures in the world of BJJ. This is a huge milestone in a martial arts career already filled with exceptional achievements.
Ray is no stranger to recognition at the highest levels. His martial arts résumé is as decorated as they come:
Olympic Silver Medallist in Judo (1992, Barcelona)
7th Dan Judo Black Belt
5th Dan Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt
Roger Gracie’s first UK black belt in BJJ
To hold such high ranks in both Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and to have represented Great Britain at the very highest level, places Ray among the most accomplished grapplers in UK history. Few, if any, in the country can match the breadth and depth of experience he brings to the mats.
But titles alone don’t define Ray. What sets him apart – and what makes this promotion so richly deserved – is his unwavering humility, deep passion for the martial arts, and his ability to connect with people of all ages and levels.
We saw this up close when Ray visited Ultimate Judo in Aberdeen to run a seminar. From the moment he stepped onto the mat, it was clear that this was someone with a rare gift. He coached with clarity and calm, adjusting his teaching to suit juniors, teens, and adults alike. Whether he was breaking down a technique or speaking about mindset, Ray delivered it all with patience, empathy, and a grounded presence that immediately earned respect.
Off the mat, Ray was equally impressive. He didn’t just talk at people – he listened. He asked about others, took time to understand their stories, and made sure the learning was a two-way exchange. There was no ego, only genuine care and interest in the people around him. That, perhaps more than anything, is what makes him such a powerful role model.
This promotion by The GOAT, Roger Gracie - himself a 10-time world champion and icon of the sport – is not just a technical recognition. It’s a tribute to Ray’s lifetime of dedication, his influence on generations of martial artists, and the integrity with which he continues to represent our sport.
Ray Stevens is, without doubt, one of the UK’s greatest grapplers – but he is also one of its most humble and generous. This honour is thoroughly deserved, and all of us at Ultimate Judo are proud to know him, proud to have trained with him, and proud to share in celebrating this moment.
Congratulations, Ray – and thank you for everything you continue to give to the martial arts community.
